Discipline and Specialization: Mediterranean archaeology, Roman imperialism and colonisation

University: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

Working days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Currently, I am the Director of the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR), and Professor in the Archaeology of the Western Mediterranean at the Groningen Institute of Archaeology of Groningen University.

As of 2018/19, I have been seconded to the institute as Director of Ancient Studies. In that capacity, I supported and represented (PhD) students and colleagues in the fields of classics, ancient history and archaeology. I was also Head of Research and, since 2020, Vice-Director of the institute. In my current role as Director, I enjoy fostering debate within and across disciplinary boundaries, as well as international research traditions – a key privilege of the Roman station within the Italian and international network that Rome offers. Together with our team, my mission is to strengthen the research profile of the institute, and to inspire meaningful connections between the research and teaching agendas of the different domains at our institute.
