Nederlandse Wetenschappelijke Instituten in het Buitenland (NWIB)

The Nederlandse Wetenschappelijke Instituten in het Buitenland (Dutch Scientific Institutes Abroad, abbreviation: NWIB) are advanced scientific institutes of Dutch universities. The institutes are mainly located around the Mediterranean region, including one in Rome.

All foreign institutes are focused on supporting and realising scientific education and research themselves. They also make a substantial contribution to raising the profile of Dutch higher education abroad. Students and staff gain international experience in various ways, for example by attending lectures and carrying out fieldwork projects or research, thus forming a network of centres of knowledge in the field of education and research.

Each institute is managed by one of the following six Dutch universities: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Universiteit Leiden, Universiteit Utrecht, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.

The Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) is managed by the University of Groningen.
