Janis Oomen obtained her bachelor’s degrees (Psychology and History) and her research master’s degree (Ancient History) at Leiden University. She is currently working on her PhD project provisionally titled ‘Traditions of the Past, Innovations of the Present: Identity Formation in the Inscribed Funerary Monuments of Roman Sicily’ at the University of Groningen. Janis’ main fields of expertise are Roman social history, funerary epigraphy, and identity formation in antiquity. She has been fortunate enough to visit the institute in various capacities: as a student attending the ‘Constantine and Rome’, ‘Roma Caput Mundi’ and ‘Latin Epigraphy on Location’ courses, and presenting at the KNIR seminar ‘The World of the Greek Epigram’; as a PhD scholarship holder in the fall of 2024 (2 September – 6 October 2024). Being one of the ambassadors of the University of Groningen, Janis is happy to share her experiences of the institute with others and is open to answering any questions.
