This two – days masterclass at the Royal Netherlands Institute (KNIR) in Rome offers an in-depth
introduction to the preservation of 19th and 20th-Century photographic materials, focusing on their
identification, care, handling and storage.
Participants will have the opportunity to examine several types of photographs selected from the
reference collection of the SMP International Conservation Studio and they will learn about historic
photographic prints, cased photographs, as well as the techniques for producing negatives in various

issues associated with them, in addition to appropriate solutions and environmental guidelines for
storage and display.
