Research
Rubén Montoya’s research focuses primarily on recent theoretical approaches to Roman art and on art from the Roman provinces. His main research interests are in globalization, glocalization, provincial art, the study of Pompeii and Antiquarism, Roman architecture and domestic spaces, Roman villas and Iconography.

His current research project Painted Bust Medallions from the Vesuvian Region: Patterns of Spatial Distribution and Social Contexts aims to carry out a contextual study of painted bust medallions in Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae and other nearby sites, thoroughly investigating their spatial distribution possible functionality, and the relationship between subject-matter and other iconographies within the spaces where they were displayed.

At the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome, Rubén’s project fits within the current research on Archaeology and Material Culture in Italy and the Western Provinces, principally developed through the different research projects directed by Prof. Dr. Tesse Stek, current supervisor of Rubén’s project in Rome (https://www.knir.it/en/mensen/research/researchers/academic-staff/dr-tesse-stek/). As part of his recent fellowship, Rubén has also started working as a member of the Spanish research group from the University of Alcalá (Spain), Archaeology: Landscapes, Colonialism and Cultural Heritage, coordinated by Prof. Lauro Olmo-Enciso: https://www.uah.es/es/investigacion/unidades-de-investigacion/grupos-de-investigacion/Arqueologia-paisajes-colonialismo-y-patrimonio-cultural-Archaeology-Landscapes-Colonialism-and-Cultural-Heritage/. In January 2024, Rubén will join the area of Archaeology in the Department of Humanities from the University of Alcalá to continue his research project under the supervision of Dr. Pilar Diarte-Blasco.
