Organised by the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome and the Swedish Institute in Rome in collaboration with the faculties of Architecture of the Università degli Studi Roma Tre and the Università degli Studi ‘La Sapienza’, the Department of Conservation of the University of Gothenburg and the VU University Amsterdam.

Objectives
The major aim of the course is to confront the participants with a critical assessment of past and modern approaches to the archaeological heritage of the city of Rome. It explores in particular how urban development, politics, ideology and research influence the way this heritage is perceived, preserved and presented.

Course content
Sites and monuments: Making the students familiar with the major archaeological sites and monuments of Rome
History and Concepts: Evaluation of the concept of archaeological heritage and its history.
Archaeology, politics and nationalism: History of the use of the archaeological heritage of Rome for national and other political purposes.
Urban development: History of the urban development of Rome and its problematic relation to archaeology
Legislation: Italian heritage legislation and policy in the context of international treaties (Malta, World Heritage convention, ICOMOS).
Archaeology and the Public: Ethics and methods of communication with the audience.
Challenges for future management: Marrying urban development with heritage management; community museums, archaeological heritage and citizenship

Place: Rome
Period: 24 May – 7 June (2 weeks).
Working language: The official language of the course will be English. Participants preferably are able to read Italian.
Form: Excursions, lectures, student presentations, essays

Lectures: To be held at participating institutions
Excursions: Apart from excursions to the major archaeological monuments of Rome, visits will be arranged to sites that have aroused debate from a heritage perspective or at which particular management and presentation programs can be examined at first hand.
Examinations: On-site student presentations, paper
Participants: MA students from Dutch, Swedish and Italian universities with an evident interest in the relation between Archaeology, Heritage Studies and Urban Planning.
Admission: max. number of students 15.

- for Swedish students: including fees, travel costs and accomodation at the Swedish Institute in Rome
- for Italian students outside Rome: including fees and accomodation at the KNIR
