van-essen_sAt the start of 2009 the KNIR library initiated the project ‘Photo collection Van Essen’.  The project involves the reordering and digitizing of photographs in the context of a stage of the University of Tuscia (Viterbo) coordinated by Prof. L. Londei and Janet Mente (KNIR librarian), executed by stagaire Massimo Cipriani (University of Tuscia). CC van Essen, archeologist and vice-director of the institute from 1946 to 1963 (year of his unexpected death) collected and took an extensive amount of pictures during his lifetime. The pictures mainly contain subjects of an historic-archeological nature. His walks in mid Italy and along the old Roman roads remain famous (all documented). These excursions, for the largest part, were also documented in photos. In specific, this material is unedited an, interestingly so, a lot of the subjects represented are now gone or difficult to visit due to the devastation of the territory in the 1960’s.

The collection consists of more then 2000 pictures now organized in databases. Half of the pictures has been digitalized. The material can be viewed in the institute ( CD-rom) and on flickr. The final phase of the project foresees in the digitalizing and publishing of all pictures in the ‘URBS’ network, filed as a bibliographical note as well as under the category images.
