Bernard H. Stolte (1949) is sinds 1993 hoogleraar in het Byzantijnse recht aan de Juridische Faculteit van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, waar hij naast dit specialisme een aantal andere rechtshistorische vakken heeft gedoceerd. Zijn proefschrift handelde over de wetenschappelijke vruchten van het iter italicum van de Hollandse jurist Henrik Brenkman en bracht hem toen en later herhaaldelijk in dezelfde bibliotheken die Brenkman in het begin van de 18de eeuw had bezocht; bij de voorbereiding diende het (K)NIR menigmaal als uitvalsbasis. Als classicus en rechtshistoricus heeft hij een bijzondere belangstelling voor de geschiedenis van juridische teksten, zowel voor hun overlevering als voor hun werking en culturele invloed. Deze belangstelling strekt zich uit van Romeinsrechtelijke papyri tot Byzantijnse juridische bronnen. Sinds 2001 is hij actief in een Europees netwerk dat de inventarisering en ontsluiting met behulp van geavanceerde digitale fotografische technieken van Griekse palimpsesten tot doel heeft, vele waarvan zich in de Vaticaanse Bibliotheek bevinden.
Stolte is gehuwd en heeft drie kinderen. |
