gebouw_mThe Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome is housed in a stately villa located on the edges of the Villa Borghese city park. The building, designed by Italian architect Gino Cipriani, was built in 1933. In order to create accommodation for students and researchers a second floor was added for this sole purpose in 1958. In 1995, under the guidance of Italian architect Claudio Catucci, the basement was renovated to build, among other things, accommodation for small groups of students, the so-called foresteria. The basement also has a computer room for guests and a meeting room / classroom for groups of students. The library and offices are located on the ground floor.

On the first floor there are two reception halls, the so-called Hoogewerff  Halls, that are used for conferences, symposia, exhibitions, concerts etc. The Couperus room is also located on this floor. This room is usually offered to visiting professors or people who are invited to take part in one of the activities organised by the Institute.
